Chigwell and Grange Hill: Community Spirit in Action

Chigwell Community Pantry
Cllr Lisa Morgan

As the District Councillor for Grange Hill and Chair of Chigwell Parish Council, I’m incredibly proud of the community spirit that thrives in our area. It’s a privilege to be involved in so many initiatives that make a real difference to people’s lives — and I’d love to share some of the incredible work happening in Chigwell and Grange Hill.

One of the projects closest to my heart is the Community Pantry. It’s a wonderful alternative to food banks, offering a dignified, affordable way for families to stock up on essentials. For just £5, visitors can pick 20 items — including fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled and frozen food, and household basics like soap powder, washing up liquid, and toilet tissue. We even ensure families with babies receive extra items like baby milk, nappies, or wipes. The pantry runs thanks to the dedication of volunteers like Frances, Kaylee, and its lead, Lynne Moir. It’s an essential lifeline for many in our community.

Our Chigwell Community Hub is a bustling centre of activity and support. On Tuesdays, alongside the Community Pantry, we run a community café, a bridge club, and host 'My Weight Matters' — promoting healthy living in a supportive setting.

Wednesdays are particularly significant. On the second Wednesday of each month, we hold a Bereavement Café from 1:30 pm to 3 pm, providing a comforting space for those coping with loss. And in the evening, we host a Men's Mental Health group — an invaluable support network that breaks down stigma and ensures no one feels alone.

On Thursdays, the Hub continues to be a hub of warmth and care. We run the pantry again, host a Memory Café from 11 am to 1 pm for those affected by dementia, and offer affordable counselling. We also run 'Multiply' courses to help people boost their skills and confidence.

Community work is about more than just running activities — it’s also about connecting people to the right support. That’s why we welcome local partners like Lynne Moir from the Limes Farm Community Group and EFDC Community Champions like Keely. Their advice and guidance ensure people can access the help they need, from mental health services to financial advice.

I’m also grateful to fellow Independent Parish Councillors like Lorraine Clarke and Rochelle Hodds, who regularly drop by to show their support. Together, we’re making sure Chigwell and Grange Hill remain places where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

Being part of this community is a privilege. From helping run the Pantry to hosting cafés and supporting mental health initiatives, I’m always proud to roll up my sleeves and work alongside our fantastic volunteers. Chigwell and Grange Hill are more than just places — they’re communities full of heart, and I’m honoured to play my part in keeping that spirit alive.
